Top 50 Masters Degree Scholarships for International Students

A great number of international scholarships that are being offered are towards a Master’s Degree, either by coursework or by research, depending on the funding institution.  Through scholarships, global universities aim to attract the very best international graduate students.  Foreign governments, international organizations, and global institutions alike offer such scholarships to develop foreign relations and promote capacity building in less developed countries.

Fulbright Foreign Student Progam
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program are prestigious scholarships for international students who wants to pursue a Master’s or PhD degree in the United States.  The Fulbright program provides funding for the duration of the study. The grant also funds tuition, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance.  See the official website for the exact scholarship inclusions.

British Chevening Scholarships
Chevening Scholarships, the UK government’s global scholarship programme, are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree. Most Chevening Scholarships cover tuition fees, a living allowance at a set rate (for one individual), an economy class return airfare to the UK,  and additional grants to cover essential expenditure. Some scholarships cover part of the cost of studying in the UK; for example, tuition fees only or allowances only.

Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship Awards
The Endeavour Postgraduate Awards provide full financial support for international students to undertake a postgraduate qualification at a Masters level either by coursework or research in any field of study in Australia.   For Masters, the Total Award Value is up to $AUD 118,500 which includes travel allowance, establishment allowance, monthly stipend, tuition fees , and health insurance.

Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme
The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs launched the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme to attract elite overseas students on Masters courses offered by French Universities.  The Eiffel programme does not cover tuition fees, though the higher education centres concerned are invited to apply the best possible financial conditions to Eiffel scholarship-holders.  Eiffel scholarship-holders on Masters courses receive a monthly allowance of €1,181. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return trip, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-cost awards for graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.  The scholarships are open to all international students from all over the world.  A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge namely: university fees, maintenance allowances, airfare, and some dependant’s allowance.

Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford
The Clarendon Fund, the University of Oxford’s flagship scholarship scheme, is open to all nationalities pursuing full-time and part-time graduate degrees at the University.  All Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses. Scholars on a full-time course receive a tax-free annual grant that is normally sufficient to cover the living expenses of a single student living in Oxford. The grant for living expenses in 2013-14 is GBP£13,726.

Sydney Achievers International Scholarships
The Sydney Achievers International Scholarships aims to attract high achieving, academically meritorious, international students to study postgraduate coursework at University of Sydney in Australia.  Each  scholarship has a value of AUD$10,000 each, available as a one-off award (AUD$10,000 each per annum, (ie, $15,000 in total for a 1.5 year program, $20,000 in total for a 2 year program) for any postgraduate coursework program offered at the University of Sydney.

Macquarie University International Scholarships
Macquarie University International Scholarships (MUIS) are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study in a postgraduate coursework degree at the University.  MUIS covers full international tuition fees but does not provide financial support in the form of a living allowance, nor does it provide for the cost of visa application, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), airfares, accommodation, conferences or other costs associated with study.

University of Birmingham Scholarships for International Students
The University of Birmingham is offering scholarships for international candidates commencing a one year Masters programme.  The scholarships are worth £10,000 towards the cost of tuition fees for a one year masters course. These awards are for tuition fees only and cannot be used for maintenance/living costs.

London Metropolitan International Scholarships
London Metropolitan University offers merit-based postgraduate scholarships to outstanding international students who wants to pursue a Master’s Degree at the University. The scholarship programme provides full and partial tuition fee financial support.

Cardiff University Scholarships for International Students
In recognition of the outstanding talent of many international students, Cardiff University offers a highly prestigious International Scholarship Fund designed to attract and reward the brightest students. There are 6 scholarships available annually for the Postgraduate Taught (Masters) level. These awards will cover tuition fees (maximum Science fees) for students studying Postgraduate Taught courses (for a maximum of 1 year).

University of Lausanne Master’s Grant for Foreign Students
The University of Lausanne in Switzerland offers scholarships to international students who wishes to pursue a Masters Degree at the University through the UNIL Master’s Grants.  The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any).

La Trobe Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students
La Trobe’s Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES) are targeted towards high achieving international students from all countries across all of La Trobe’s postgraduate coursework programs.  The scholarships are non-renewable tuition fee awards of A$10,000-$20,000 paid across a maximum period of two semesters (or twelve months). Recipients of the scholarship would be required to pay for any difference in fees for their first two semesters, fees for the remainder of their course and also Overseas Student Health Cover. These scholarships are not renewable and do not cover living costs.

Bocconi University Scholarships for International Students
Bocconi University offers merit scholarships to international students enrolling in any Master of Science Program at Bocconi. Forty (40) scholarships are to be offered for the Master’s Program.  The scholarship consists of full tuition waiver worth approximately € 11,500.00 per year for a maximum of 2 academic years.

K.U. Leuven Scholarships for International Students
The Science@Leuven Scholarship are for motivated and talented international students, interested in participating in an international master programme of the Faculty of Science of the K.U.Leuven. The amount of the scholarship can be up to 8,000 Euro for 1 year. The scholarship will always cover the tuition fee for 1 year, the insurance and a basic health insurance coverage. The amount awarded for living expenses can vary.

University of Bern Excellence Scholarships for International Students
The University of Bern Masters Grants are for international students who wish to pursue a Master’s programme at the University. Criteria for selection are academic excellence and the candidate’s potential and motivation.  The grant consists of 1600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master’s programme.

Bristol University International Office Scholarships
The University of Bristol is offering ten International Office Scholarships for new international students who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree at the University.  The scholarships are worth £8,500 which can go towards your tuition fee.

University of West England International Ambassador Scholarships
The International Ambassador Scholarship recognises and provides financial support for outstanding students who wish to pursue a full time postgraduate degree at University of West England. The scholars will act as international ambassadors for the University of West London.  Up to 100 scholarships are worth up to £5,000 ($7,500 USD) which can go toward tuition fees.

Leiden University Excellence Scholarships
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is open to outstanding  Non-EU/EEA students pursuing a master’s degree programme at Leiden University. Depending on the student’s merit, the scholarship covers 25-100% of the tuition fees. The highest award covers the tuition fee minus the home fee* and an allowance of €10,000 for living costs.

University of Maastricht High Potential Scholarships
Maastricht University (UM) aims to encourage talented students from outside the EEA to follow a master’s programme at UM.  These scholarships are fully-funded scholarships which includes tuition fee, living expenses, visa costs, and insurance.

Radboud University Scholarship Programme
The Radboud Scholarship Programme offers a selected number of talented prospective non-EEA students the opportunity to receive a scholarship to pursue a complete English-taught Master’s degree programme at Radboud University Nijmegen (of one or two whole years).  The scholarship is not an amount of money that you will receive on your bank account but consists of a partial tuition waiver. The tuition fee will be waived to the level of an EEA student.  In addition the Radboud Scholarship also covers costs such as for visa, residence permit,  health insurance and liability insurance.

University of Twente Scholarships
University Twente Scholarships (UTS) are scholarships for excellent students from non-EEA countries, applying for a graduate programme (MSc) at the University of Twente.   The scholarship amount for students from non-EU/EEA countries is either € 10,000, € 12,500, €20,000, or € 22,500.

Lund University Global Scholarships
The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland). Top academic students have a proven record of achieving consistently high grades in previous studies. The scholarship is selective and completely merit based.   The scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fee. The scholarship value is deducted from the tuition fee of the programme or free-standing course for which you are awarded a scholarship.

University of Oulu International Scholarships
The University of Oulu International Master’s Scholarships provide scholarships in architecture, business, economics, education, engineering, and sciences to academically talented international students outside the EU/EEA who wants to study a Master’s Programme at the University.  The scholarship is for one academic year and covers the full international tuition fee.

Sheffield Hallam University Transform Together Scholarships
Transform Together scholarships are open to students from any non-EU country applying to study full time postgraduate programme at Sheffield Hallam University.  The scholarships are specially targeted to international students who want to represent the international student body at Sheffield Hallam University.  The scholarships include a one-year full tuition fee waiver for a full-time taught postgraduate courses.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarships for International Students
The University of Amsterdam aims to attract the world’s brightest students to its international classrooms. Outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship. The scholarship consists of € 6,000, € 9,000 or € 12,000, but awards are based on the comprehensive financial plan, which should demonstrate the extent of the need for additional funding. Please note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. The applicant must still pay the full amount of tuition due.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships
The European Union (EU) offers full-time scholarships for a wide range of Masters programmes to students coming from developing/emerging countries outside the EU.  The programme offers full scholarships and/or fellowships that cover the living costs, tuition fees, travelling and insurance costs of the students.

Commonwealth Scholarships for Developing Commonwealth Countries
The Commonwealth Scholarships are for students from developing Commonwealth countries who wants to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in the UK.  Each scholarship provides return airfare, tuition fees, personal maintenance allowance, thesis grant, initial arrival allowance, etc.

Australian Awards Scholarships
Australia Awards Scholarships, formerly known as Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), are scholarships for international students who wants to pursue a Masters Degree at Australian Universities. The scholarships cover full tuition fees, return air travel, establishment allowance, health insurance, living allowance, etc.

Netherlands Masters Fellowship Program
The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) allow candidates from 61 developing countries to pursue  Master studies at Dutch Universities or academic institutions. An NFP fellowship is intended to supplement the salary that the fellowship holder should continue to receive (at least partially) during the study period. The allowance is considered to be a contribution towards the cost of living for one person, whether in the Netherlands or in another country. The fellowship also covers the costs of tuition fees, visas, travel costs, insurance and thesis research.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships
The Swedish Institute provides scholarships in Sweden to highly-qualified international students from developing countries who wants to study at Sweden Universities.  Scholarships are intended for studies in Sweden and focus mainly on master’s level.

Quota Scholarship Scheme
The Quota Scheme awards scholarships for international students from certain developing countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Palestinian Authorities. The scheme normally funds courses at the Masters level.  Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study.

VLIR-UOS Scholarship Awards
VLIR-UOS awards training and masters scholarships to students from selected developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America so that they can pursue a Training and Master’s Programme related to development at Universities in Belgium.  Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master’s students.  The scholarships cover tuition fee, accomodation, allowance, travel costs,  and other program related costs.

CUD Scholarships
The University Commission for Development (CUD) provides scholarships to international students from selected developing countries who wants to pursue training or Master’s study in Belgium.  CUD provides cutting-edge international Masters courses for development.

Joint Japan World Bank Scholarships
The Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarships  (JJ/WBGSP) allows eligible students from World Bank member countries (including most developing countries) to pursue a Master’s Degree related to development at participating Universities around the world.  The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides annual awards to cover the cost of completing a master’s degree or its equivalent including tuition fees, travel costs, and living allowance.

OFID Scholarships
The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) are open to qualified students from any developing country who wish to pursue Master’s Degree in a subject related to development at any recognized University of his/her choice.  The scholarship covers tuition fees, allowance, health insurance, relocation grant, and travel costs.  OFID awards only one scholarship per year.

Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships
The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies.  Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year.

Rotary Foundation Global Study Grants
The Rotary Foundation Global Grants can be used to fund scholarships with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of Rotary’s six areas of focus related to development. The study grants are valued at least $30,000.

ADB Japan Scholarship Program
The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) aims to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to undertake postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region.  The ADB-JSP provides full tuition fees, a monthly subsistence and housing allowance, an allowance for books and instructional materials, medical insurance, and travel expenses.

KAAD Scholarships for Developing Countries
The KAAD scholarships are addressed to post-graduates and to academics who already gained professional experience and who are interested in postgraduate studies (or research stays) in Germany.  The scholarship are targeted to citizens of developing or emerging countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America.

University of Westminster International Scholarships
University of Westminster awards scholarships to eligible students from any developing country who wish to study in the UK and pursue a full-time Masters degree in any field of study at the University of Westminster.  The scholarship awards full tuition fee waivers, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Developing Solutions Scholarships at University of Nottingham
The Developing Solutions Scholarships are designed for international students from Africa, India or one of the developing countries of the Commonwealth who want to study a Masters Degree at the University of Nottingham and make a difference to the development of their home country. Each year,  105 scholarships  are awardedâ€" 30 scholarships will cover the full tuition fee while 75 will cover 50% of the tuition fee.

Ghent University Scholarships for Developing Countries
Ghent University provides postgraduate Masters scholarships to international students from developing countries who wish to study in Belgium and obtain a Master’s degree at Ghent University.  The scholarships consist of a monthly allowance, yearly tuition fee and one-time relocation fee.  Each year, a maximum of 10 scholarships can be awarded.

Edinburgh Global Development Academy Scholarships
The University of Edinburgh offers Masters Scholarships for international students from least developing countries for eligible Master’s programmes offered by the University.  There will be 2 Master’s scholarships covering the overseas rate of tuition fee for students from less developed countries.

University of Pavia Scholarships for Developing Countries
The University of Pavia (UNIPV), in order to promote international cooperation with the Developing Countries, offers scholarships for selected Masters Studies at the University of Pavia or at the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS) in Italy.  Six (6) scholarships of 8,000 Euros will be available.  Each scholarship will cover also the expenses for the visa and the travel to Italy and back (economy class).

London Met Scholarships for Developing Countries
The ISH/London Met Scholarships is jointly run by International Students House (ISH) and London Metropolitan University. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding students from selected developing countries who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree at the University.  Successful candidates receive free tuition for the duration of their degree at postgraduate level plus one year of free accommodation at International Students House.

University of Bradford Scholarships for Developing Countries in Crisis
The University of Bradford Countries in Crisis Scholarships are intended to aid students in financial hardship due to the fact that they are domiciled in a country that is in crisis as a result of the political situation, war, natural disaster etc.  The scholarships are for full-time Master’s Programmes offered at the University. Each scholarship is worth approximately £20,000 which includes full tuition fees and accommodation plus £2000 per annum living costs.

International Development Scholarships of University of East London
The University of East London International Development Scholarship in association with International Students House (ISH) is a combined tuition fee, residential and maintenance scholarship offered to an international student from selected developing countries who intends to make a positive contribution to the development of their home country as result of completing the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme, who would otherwise be unable to pursue the Programme for financial reasons.

United Nations University Scholarships for Developing Country Students
The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance and who are granted admissions to Master of Science in Sustainability, Development, and Peace at United Nations University.  The JFUNU scholarship covers the full tuition fees, and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student.

University of East Anglia Development Scholarships
The University of East Anglia is offering partial and full scholarships for students from developing/low-income countries. The scholarships are for Bachelors or Masters Degree in International development courses offered by the School of International Development.   Multiple International Development Scholarships worth £1,000 fees awards and One (1) International Development Full Fees Scholarship are offered to international taught applicants on the basis of academic excellence and their personal statement.
