DAAD University Summer Course Grants in Germany, 2015

DAAD is inviting applications for Summer Course Grants to attend 3- to 4-week summer language courses at German universities. Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing full-time study at Canadian or US colleges or universities. Applicants must be citizens of Canada or the US. International students may be eligible to apply if they have been full-time students at an American or Canadian university for at least one year at the time of application. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic record and statements of projected academic and professional future. All requirements must be met by the application deadline. The application deadline is December 15, 2014.

Eligibility:
-Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing full-time study at Canadian or US colleges or universities. There are no restrictions as to field of study, but applicants must have attained at least sophomore standing (10 full-course credits for Canadians) at the time of application.
-As a rule, applicants must be citizens of Canada or the US. International students may be eligible to apply if they have been full-time students at an American or Canadian university for at least one year at the time of application. Applicants must have completed a minimum of four semesters of college German (or have obtained an equivalent level of language proficiency elsewhere) in order to be able to participate in group projects and follow lectures in German.
-All requirements must be met by the application deadline.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Applicants must be citizens of Canada or the US. International students may be eligible if they have been full-time students at an American or Canadian university for at least one year at the time of application.

Scholarship Description: This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of 3- to 4-week summer language courses at German universities which focus mainly on German language and literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Extensive extracurricular programs complement and reinforce the core material. A number the University Summer Course Grants are made possible by the DAAD Alumni Association of the US, including one that is specially earmarked for an applicant in the fine arts. Duration of award(s): Scholarships are available for courses lasting a minimum of three weeks.

What does it cover? The scholarship is approximately €850, which covers tuition, room and board in whole or in part. Accommodations are arranged by the host institution. In addition, DAAD will provide an international travel subsidy of €300-450. Scholarship recipients are expected to devote their full attention to the course and may not concurrently undertake individual research. A written report is requested within four weeks of the end of the course.

Selection Criteria: Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic record and statements of projected academic and professional future. Demonstrated interest in Germany and Europe and/or the need to learn the German language for professional or academic purposes will also be taken into consideration.

Notification: The results of the competition are usually announced at the beginning of April.

How to Apply: The application form must be completed online and you must send the application printout with your signature, your supplemental documents and materials to the DAAD New York office. Every component of the application, with the exception of the recommendation letter, must be submitted in duplicate (one original, one photocopy); applications not submitted in duplicate will not be processed. A complete application consists of the following parts. Please collate, but do not staple (do not staple any part of the application), each set of the application materials in this order:
-Completed DAAD application form.
-A curriculum vitae (résumé)
-Autobiographical essay in German would be appreciated.
-A detailed statement (in English) of approximately 500 words explaining why the applicant wants to attend a University Summer Course.
-A recommendation letter written by a professor in the field of your degree study. It should not be from the same professor who evaluates your language proficiency. (Since most referees prefer to provide them in a sealed envelope, you may submit one original letter without the photocopy.)
-Complete, official transcripts of all post-secondary studies. (You may open the official transcript to make a photocopy if obtaining two official ones costs you extra.)
-DAAD language evaluation form (“Sprachzeugnis”).
-The language evaluation form is part of the application form and must be completed and signed by a faculty member of the German Department at the applicant’s institution or by an official of a Goethe-Institut.
