2015 Junior Clinical Training Scholarships in Farm Animal Health and Production, UK

Department of Veterinary Medicine at University of Cambridge is offering two training scholarships for new or recently qualified veterinary graduates in the area of farm animal medicine and surgery. The emphasis of this programme will be on gaining practical clinical experience all aspects of farm animal health and production, with particular emphasis on ruminant species. The Scholarship is for one year only, beginning on 1 August 2015. Eligible applicant must be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or hold a veterinary degree qualifying him/ her for membership. The application deadline is 31 March 2015.

Scholarship Description: The Junior Clinical Training Scholarship in farm animal provides an opportunity for new or recently qualified veterinary graduates to obtain high-quality, post-graduate training in farm animal medicine and surgery. The emphasis of this programme will be on gaining practical clinical experience all aspects of farm animal health and production, with particular emphasis on ruminant species. The programme will allow the Scholar to identify specific fields of farm animal work in which to specialise, either in preparation for Senior Clinical Training Scholarship programmes (residencies), or in specialist private farm animal practice. The Scholarship fulfills European College specialism intern requirements.

Number of award(s): There are 2 scholarships available.

Duration of award(s): The Junior Scholarship is for one year only, beginning on 1 August 2015, subject to the satisfactory completion of an initial 3-month monitoring period.

What does it cover? The value of Junior Scholarship is £ 14,700. The scholarship programme will cover:-
-Case management of individual production animals, including emergency and critical care, surgery, anaesthesia, diagnostics, internal medicine and obstetrics.
-Involvement in a busy and expanding first opinion farm animal practice
-Training and practice in population medicine and herd health management, with an emphasis on evidence base medicine
-Experience in teaching and communication
-Basic tuition in research methods and scientific writing.
-Opportunity to design and undertake research projects

Selection Criteria: The following are essential:
-Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
-Experience of working, and willingness to work, as part of a team
-Willingness to seek, and to accept, guidance and supervision from all Hospital staff involved with clinical work
-Ability and willingness to provide guidance and supervision to students
-Proven ability to work across the relevant species, and experience of handling all relevant species
-Ability to cope with out of hours emergency working
-Willingness to complete the JCTS training programme
-Proven attention to detail
-A good understanding of the professional context of veterinary medicine
-A clean driving licence

Notification: The Department will endeavour to notify scholarship applicants who have been shortlisted for interview within ten days of the closing date for applications. Interviews for the Junior Scholarship will be held on 17 April 2015.
