African Forest Forum (AFF) Research Fellowships in Africa, 2015

The African Forest Forum (AFF) is awarding research fellowships on assessment of impacts of climate change vulnerability of biophysical and socio-economic systems with particular emphasis on gender responsiveness and critical ecosystems in Africa. Each fellow will receive up to USD 10,000 for research and USD 2,000 to cover cost of travel, subsistence, and accommodation while in the field including supervision. Fellowship research activities should begin no later than 1 July 2015. The applications deadline is 11 May 2015.

Eligibility:
General eligibility criteria
-Be a citizen of an African nation.
-Proposed fellowship project and activities must be clearly related to, and likely to advance impacts of climate change vulnerability of biophysical and socio-economic systems with particular emphasis on gender responsiveness and critical ecosystems in Africa within the selected broad areas.
-All application materials must be complete and received by the AFF Secretariat on or before the application deadline.
-All applicants must be supervised by a faculty member with expertise in the broad area of focus of the fellowship.
Specific eligibility criteria
-Prospective research fellows must:
-Have a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree plus two or more years of professional experience related to forestry, natural resource management, development studies, climate change and environmental studies.
-Be already enrolled in a university as a graduate student and must have completed the course work for the degree at the time of application.

Scholarship Open for International Students: African citizens can apply for these fellowships.

Scholarship Description: The African Forest Forum (AFF) is a pan-African non-governmental organization with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. It is an association of individuals who share the quest for and commitment to the sustainable management, use and conservation of the forest and tree resources of Africa for the socio-economic wellbeing of its people and for the stability and improvement of its environment. The purpose of AFF is to provide a platform and create an enabling environment for independent and objective analysis, advocacy and advice on relevant policy and technical issues pertaining to achieving sustainable management, use and conservation of Africa’s forest and tree resources as part of efforts to reduce poverty, promote gender equality, and economic and social development. Through all its programmes and activities, AFF seeks to promote the empowerment of all marginalized groups particularly women who have remained vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and whose representation, priorities and needs are seldom addressed in the forestry sector.

Number of award(s): Research fellowships will be provided to a total of 10 postgraduate students from 10 countries in 2015 who are based in African institutions of higher learning as well as those working in relevant forestry based research institutions to support their Doctoral or Master’s Program at an African university.

What does it cover? Research fellows will be matched with an African host institution, where they will reside for at least part of their fellowship experience. Each fellow will receive up to USD 10,000 for research and USD 2,000 to cover cost of travel, subsistence, and accommodation while in the field including supervision.

Selection Criteria: All applications that meet the general and specific eligibility criteria will be evaluated against the following criteria:
-Quality of the research proposal, stated objectives and methodology.
-Technical merit of the proposed work.
-Qualifications and capabilities of the applicant to undertake the proposed research work.
-Appropriateness of the proposed budget.
-Appropriateness of proposed host institution and supervisor’s expertise.

Notification: Results of the selection panel will be announced to successful applicants by 8 June 2015.

-An institutional support form or letter that confirms the applicant’s university/college formal endorsement of his or her ability to participate in the research fellowship with the name of a potential main research supervisor indicating his/her willingness to supervise and guide the student research from inception to completion.
-A research proposal description with clearly defined research questions/objectives, methodology on the research area, targeted tasks that can be completed within the fellowship period, and explaining how the supported activities will improve the overall scientific quality of the research and the utility of the research on the impacts of climate change vulnerability of biophysical and socio-economic systems with particular emphasis on gender responsiveness and critical ecosystems. Evidence must be provided that the proposal has been accepted for that level of study by the university/college.
-A budget estimate showing the approximate costs related to each research activity.
