Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in Australia, 2015

Heart Foundation is offering postdoctoral fellowships for PhD graduates in the first 3 years after obtaining their PhD. Fellowship encourages and supports early career cardiovascular health researchers to develop research skills and independence from an early stage. Fellowships are tenable for two years and are not extendable or renewable. Postdoctoral Fellowships provide salary support only. Stipend funding levels for Fellowships commencing in 2016 is $75,000 p.a. (pro-rata). The application deadline is 24 April 2015.

Eligibility: At the time of application, applicants (Chief Investigator only) must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident or must have applied to become an Australian permanent resident. Evidence that Australian permanent residency has been granted will be required before an award can commence. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of the award. Applicants must be in their first 3 years post awarding of their PhD on the application closing date, in any area of cardiovascular health research, including biomedical, clinical, public health and health service delivery.

Scholarship Description: The Heart Foundation is an independent, Australia-wide, not-for-profit health organisation, funded almost entirely by donations from the Australian public. Their purpose is to reduce premature death and suffering from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease in Australia. The Heart Foundation offers awards to fund research which is conducted primarily in Australia and is engaged in research related to cardiovascular health.

Duration of award(s): Fellowships are tenable for two years and are not extendable or renewable. They may be full time or part time at a minimum of 0.8 FTE. Requests for FTEs less than 0.8 FTE will not be considered by the Heart Foundation.

What does it cover? Postdoctoral Fellowships provide salary support only. Stipend funding levels for Fellowships commencing in 2016 is $75,000 p.a. (pro-rata).

Selection Criteria: This award will be assessed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee (PFC). The PFC will rank all applications against each other based on a summary of your track record, research environment, proposed project and relevance to cardiovascular health. The assessment will be based primarily on the one page ‘Executive Summary’ that forms part of your application. It is expected that only the top 30%-70% (depending on the number of application received) of applications will proceed to the next stage of assessment. Feedback will not be provided to candidates who are unsuccessful at this stage (up to 70% of applications).

Notification: Applicants will usually be notified of the outcome of their application in late November and successful applicants will be provided with administrative details for their funding. All applicants who are unsuccessful at this stage will receive quantitative feedback on their ranking.

How to Apply: Applications will only be accepted from the Research Office of an NHMRC Administering Institution. It is the responsibility of the applicant and the Research Administration Officer to ensure that the application is complete and accurate. Applications must be completed using the pro-forma provided by the Heart Foundation and must be submitted in the same format as the pro-forma by email. Files should be named using the following convention: Surname_2015_PdF (e.g. Smith_2015_PdF).
