2015 PhD Positions in Biomedical Dementia Research at University of Exeter, UK

University of Exeter is inviting applications for PhD positions to undertake a doctoral training programme in biomedical dementia research. Projects will be funded for either 3 or 3.5 years, depending on the nature of the research. The projects will be fully funded for UK and EU students. International students who are ineligible for UK/EU fee levels are welcome to apply, but must have certified and guaranteed means to fund the additional fees required. The doctoral training centre involves supervisors from three of the University’s six colleges. The application deadline is 8th February 2015.

Eligibility: Applicants should be highly motivated and have, or expect to obtain, either a first or upper-second class BSc (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. International applicants must also have IELTS  score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

Scholarship Description: The University of Exeter is seeking a number of high quality applicants for an exciting new cross-college doctoral training programme dedicated to training the biomedical dementia researcher of the future. They intend to appoint to either four or five of the projects for Autumn 2015 entry. The projects unfilled in this first appointment round will be reoffered for entry to the programme in Autumn 2016.

What does it cover? The projects will be fully funded for UK and EU students. Stipends are £15000 in year one and £16000 per annum subsequently. University fees will also be paid in full for eligible UK/EU applicants. International students who are ineligible for UK/EU fee levels are welcome to apply, but must have certified and guaranteed means to fund the additional fees required.

Selection Criteria: The appointment process will be run such that a candidate ranking is produced. Ranking will be based upon the provided CV and its accompanying cover letter along with a panel’s assessment of research potential determined at interview. The top scoring candidates will then, in order of rank, be able to choose the available project they wish to pursue. As part of their application the candidates are requested to indicate the two projects which interest them the most- these indications are not binding but are designed to aid in the shortlisting process.

How to Apply: Please send a CV and covering letter and names and contact details of at least two referees. The letter should outline applicant’s general academic interests and any prior research experience. The cover letter should also identify the one or two of the projects which particularly interest them and provide a brief description of what attracts them to these specific research areas. They would also like to receive copies of degree transcript(s) (giving full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained.
