Scholarship Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship (3 years) funded by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham to undertake experimental research into the large-scale coherent structures of the turbulent boundary layer. This post is sponsored by EADS UK Ltd, a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services, comprising Airbus, Astrium, Cassidian and Eurocopter. Turbulent coherent structures are vitally important for the maintenance of wall turbulence. They are responsible for near-wall turbulence events, such as sweeps and ejections, which account for more than 80 % of energy production in the turbulent boundary layer. It is possible, therefore, to reduce turbulent skin-friction drag by controlling the turbulent coherent structures. The Drag Reduction and Flow Control Group of the University of Nottingham is currently researching and developing active techniques of controlling the turbulent boundary layer for drag reduction.

Duration of award:

PhD studentship is offered for 3 years.

What does it cover?

The studentship will cover PhD tuition fees and a tax free stipend for three years (£13,590 for the 2012-13 academic year) for UK/EU students. An additional £2000 a year may be awarded for students with a 1st class degree / MSc Distinction from a UK Russell Group University or equivalent. The studentship will start in December 2012.
