Eligibility:
Applicants must hold an academic degree in natural sciences (MSc or equivalent) acceptable for matriculation as a PhD student at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Of note, the candidate should have a solid basis in cell biology and molecular biology, and needs to be proficient in English.

Scholarship Description: A better understanding of diabetic nephropathy is urgently needed as this renal disease is the most prevalent reason for kidney failure and renal replacement therapy. The successful candidate will be involved in investigating the role of free fatty acids and free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The PhD-project will involve in vitro studies with podocytes investigating the potential role of FFAs to elicit an inflammatory response. For knockdown and overexpression of genes we use a lentiviral system which allows us to dissect the molecular mechanisms. The project will also mainly involve breeding and characterization of a podocyte specific knockout mouse for a key enzyme of FFA metabolism.
