Scholarship Description: The University of Luxembourg seeks to hire outstanding researchers at its Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). SnT is a recently formed centre carrying out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) systems and services, often in collaboration with industrial, governmental or international partners. SnT is active in several international research projects funded by the EU 7th framework programme and the European Space Agency. The successful candidate will participate in the activities of the Secan-Lab research group (Security and Networking Lab) led by Prof. Dr. Thomas Engel. He/she will contribute to the following research project: Over recent decades, traffic density has continuously increased. In many metropolitan areas, the road network has reached its limit and cannot easily be extended to meet the growing traffic demand. Consequently more and more drivers are stuck in traffic, causing billions of dollars worth of economic damage. In Luxembourg the delays caused by traffic congestion are estimated to increase driving time by more 21% compared to normal traffic conditions. The aim of this project is to exploit collected traffic data (e.g. speed, position, route), retrieved by mobile traffic sensors such as mobile phones. This data can be used to design dynamic routing strategies, which take into account changing traffic conditions and predictable traffic patterns to provide the best possible equilibrium for the traffic and thus reduce individual and global traffic delays in urban environments.
