Eligibility:

-Applicants must have good communication skills, be comfortable in liaising with parents, able to work comfortably with others and have demonstrated proficiency in scientific writing.
-Preference will be given to applicants with prior knowledge, skills or experience in one or more of immunisation, microbiology, infectious diseases, immunology, clinical trials, paediatrics and statistical analysis.
-Applicants must be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Scholarship Description:

A full-time post graduate scholarship is available for a medical graduate with suitable postgraduate qualifications such as Part I of FRACP, FAFPHM or FRACGP and/or Masters level qualifications in Medicine or Public Health, who is eligible for enrolment as a PhD candidate through the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Sydney. The project is partially funded by a Foundation for Children grant to commence in 2013 and is part of a large program of internationally leading pertussis-related research underway at NCIRS, which is also relevant to the PhD. The primary project will investigate the safety and effectiveness of different pertussis vaccine strategies in infants, and is linked to other research examining neonatal, infant and maternal vaccination, aimed at preventing severe pertussis in infancy. Work will be based at the National Centre located at the Children’s Hospital Westmead.

Tenure of award:

Scholarship is offered for one year.

Value:

The scholarship is valued at the equivalent level of an NHMRC PhD scholarship per annum (tax exempt, approximately $28000) in 2013 for the first year. It is likely that opportunities for additional paid employment within the scholarship guidelines will also be available. Applicants will be expected to apply for NHMRC PhD scholarship and/or University of Sydney PhD scholarship funding in 2013 for ongoing funding.
