Scholarship Description:  The PhD student will work on structural and theoretical studies of protein-ligand interactions, using the carbohydrate binding protein galectin-3 as a model system. Structural studies will be Conducted using neutron crystallography in combination with X-ray crystallography at very high resolution (<0.9 à ). The work will include production of crystals of suitable size for neutron diffraction, data collection and processing and modeling. The theoretical studies will be conducted in Ulf Rydeâs group at theoretical Chemistry. We will provide development methods to combine Crystallographic refinement and quantum mechanical calculations. In addition, we perform molecular dynamic simulations and estimates of Binding Affinities using free energy perturbation.Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who: have completed a second-cycle degree, have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
