Eligibility:
-An MSc in Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics, or alternatively a BSc degree and the equivalent of one year of MSc studies in Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics.
-A BSc/An MSc thesis within machine learning and/or image analysis
-Documented programming skills and experience in programming with C++
-Documented solid foundation in mathematics
-Good English written and oral communication skills.

Scholarship Description: The goal of this project is to develop image and machine learning techniques to improve the classification of galaxy morphology and other astrophysical properties. Methodologically, this requires research on large-scale learning algorithms, methods for domain adaptation, and image features. The project will be carried out under the supervision of Christian Igel and Kim Steenstrup Pedersen and in collaboration with the Dark Cosmology Centre at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, and DTU Space, Technical University of Denmark. The appointment is for a period of 3 or 4 years and the scholarship can be commenced as of 1 April 2013, or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary and appointment terms are according to the agreement for PhD scholarships as of 1 April 2012, according to which the monthly salary amounts to approximately EUR 3,700 including pension savings.
