Scholarship Description: We are working with the domestic dog as a model organism for human disease. The aim of the research is to identify new pathways, genes and mutations behind a variety of diseases present in both dogs and humans. Dogs, as for other domestic animals, have a genomic structure suitable for gene mapping. In addition, dogs share both the same spectrum of diseases as humans and our living-environment. Taking advantage of those characteristics may provide knowledge of genetic risk factors underlying human diseases. In general our approach goes from identifying risk loci in a dog breed, all the way to providing functional evidence of an identified mutationâs contribution to disease development. Our goal is to gain knowledge necessary for the future development of genetic testing, diagnostics and therapy for the dogs. In parallel we translate our findings to genetic discoveries in human patients with corresponding diseases, thereby providing information that can improve human health.
Number of Awards: 2

Value: Salaries rates will be followed according to the departmental guidelines.
Selection Criteria: We are looking for two highly motivated people who are interested in pursuing a PhD in the field of Comparative Genetics and Functional Genomics. More specifically, the main project would involve functional characterization of candidate mutations for autoinflammatory disease or mammary tumour. Each project also involves comparative studies in human patients with the equivalent disease.
